Google Translate API v2(Labs)が、昨日(8月24日)より有料化されたようです。
Back in May, we announced the deprecation of the free Translate API v1. Today, we’re introducing a paid version of the Google Translate API for businesses and commercial software developers.
The paid version of Translate API removes many of the usage restrictions of previous versions and can now be used in commercial products. Translation costs $20 per million (M) characters of text translated (or approximately $0.05/page, assuming 500 words/page). You can sign up online via the APIs console for usage up to 50 M chars/month.

Important: Google Translate API v2 is now available as a paid service. The courtesy limit for existing Translate API v2 projects created prior to August 24, 2011 will be reduced to zero on Dec 1, 2011. 有料版Google Translate APIを利用するには、Google APIs Consoleからsign upする必要があります。また、決済方法はGoogle Checkoutを有効にしないといけないようです。
弊社の提供しているAndroidアプリ、gTranslatorでは、Google Translate API v2(Labs)を利用しているのですが、時を同じくして、Android Marketのデベロッパーコンソールに以下の様なコメントが寄せられました。
最近 とても良かったけど、全く使えなくなりました。どうにかして下さい。
この時点で、Google APIs Consoleからsign upはしてあるのでAPIは使えるのですが、決済のGoogle Checkoutは有効になっていないのでエラーになるのかもしれません。
と思い試してみたのですが、手持ちのHTC Desire SoftBank X06HTではエラーが発生しないのです。有料化とこの件は別の問題かもしれませんが、取り急ぎ、回避策をご紹介したいと思います。
gTranslatorをお使いの皆様へ
本アプリケーションでは、翻訳エンジンにGoogle Translate API v1、Google Translate API v2(Labs)、Microsoft Bing Translateを利用しています。そのため、Google Translate API v2(Labs)を使用する設定になっている場合には、翻訳時にエラーが発生する可能性がございます。
エラーが頻発するような場合には、以下の手順をお試しください。
翻訳エンジンの設定を変更する
翻訳画面にてメニューを開く
翻訳画面を開き、お持ちのAndroidの「menu」ボタンを押します。
「menu」ボタンは、以下の赤枠内のようなボタンです。
Settingsメニューを選択し、設定画面を開く
「menu」ボタンを押すと、翻訳画面の下部にオプションメニューが表示されますので、「Settings」メニューを選択します。
翻訳エンジンの設定を「Google Translate API v2(Labs)」以外を設定する
「Settings」メニューを押すと、設定画面が開きます。
赤枠部分をタップすると、翻訳エンジンを選択するダイアログが表示されます。
「Google Translate API v2(Labs)」以外を選択します。
赤枠部分の表示が変わりました。
※ なお、ここでは「Microsoft Bing Translate」を選択しています。
これで、次回からの翻訳には、有料化された翻訳エンジン「Google Translate API v2(Labs)」は利用されませんので、今まで通りご利用になれます。
考察
Google APIs Consoleを見ると、8月25日（木）23時時点で、APIの利用料金は発生していません。
翻訳量が少ないからでしょうか？それとも1ヶ月後に課金されるのでしょうか？また、手元のAndroidではエラーも発生しておりませんので、まったく利用できないというわけでもなさそうです。
Spring cleaning for some of our APIs – The official Google Code blogのアナウンスとその反響をうけて、Google Translate API自体が有料になる可能性があることは知っていたのですが、有料化に関してはTwitterのTLで突然知ったので、回避策をブログで告知する程度の対策しかできていないのが残念です。
早急にアプリケーションの対応と今後の対策を検討いたします。
また、今まで以上に有力な情報をcatch upできるよう、アンテナを広げていきたいと思います。
